Omni Page Pro 7.0

Optical Character Recognition Software

by Sandy Lindsey

OmniPage Pro has long been one of my favorite OCR softwares in the market, and they've just gotten better with version 7.0 for Windows 95. New features include:

  • An OCR Wizard which guides the user through the process by having them answer simple questions. This is a godsend to both new users who have no previous OCR experience and the occasional OCR user who has to refamiliarize himself with procedures after months of not using his scanner,
  • An expanded AutoOCR Toolbar to guide users through the process including a new "Save As" button which lets the user save output text in a variety of word processing, spreadsheet and other text-based formats.
  • This is an easy-use option that I have been waiting for on both OmniPage Pro software and many of its competitors.
  • An "OCR and Check" option that automatically launches the check recognition to verify output immediately when complete.

We put OmniPro through its paces by giving it incredibly difficult-to-read fax reproductions and fuzzy copier machine copies and it came through like an Olympic champ, with results ranging from no distortion to very minimal distortion in the final text. We put the same documents through two unnamed competitors and had about 80% loss of accuracy.

Perhaps my favorite feature on OmiPage Pro for Windows 95 Version 7.0 is its ability to create an HTML output directly from within the OCR application. This ability -- which was implemented in OmniPage Pro 6.0 for MacIntosh -- to move the text directly to an HTML editor such as Microsoft Internet Assistant or SofQuad's HoTMetaL has the potential to save web page designers considerable hours of work and frustration.

The package retails for $499, but if you own any Caere OCR product, including those bundled with flatbed and edge feed scanners, you can upgrade to the full version of OmniPagePro for just $129.
